In June and in November 2023 we held our workshop (which was attended by invitation only), to join at our corporate registered office in Ottawa and using zoom, from across Canada and abroad, to work on many aspects of the project development.

Peter John Lawrence, originally from the U.K., made Canada his home in 1962 and has since woven an impressive tapestry of business acumen and athletic passion. His international endeavors span 22 countries, and he was the driving force to build 10 companies. With a strong technical educational foundation as a C.Eng., a professional engineering position in England, Peter transitioned to Canada, securing a prestigious membership with the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario (A.P.E.O.) P.Eng. His foray from Hi Tech R&D into the business and commercial realm as a consultant honed his skills in planning, sales, marketing, and the art of business formation, development, and financing.

A passionate water polo enthusiast, Peter’s accolades in the sport trace back to his days in England, Wales, and Holland plus and enthusiastic water polo player at Imperial College, London University. Remarkably, he resurrected the sport in Ottawa, which had faded post World War II. His tireless contributions spanning over five decades to water polo earned him a coveted “Lifetime Aquatic Award.”

Beyond his business ventures and athletic pursuits, Peter has devoted the past five years to meticulous research aimed at sculpting a strategic blueprint for the founding of this world-class aquatics’ facility in Ottawa – the visionary of NAqC. As the Project Founder and Leader, he meticulously sculpted the infrastructure, design, and financing components, and rallied a robust team to fulfill the aquatic aspirations of the Greater Ottawa Area (GOA). This project has dramatically expanded to include all aquatics and several nonaquatic sports. Embarking on this endeavor as a self-funded volunteer, Peter’s mission is more than just bricks-and-mortar. It’s about cultivating a shared vision with a consortium of advisors and industry mavens.

Peter’s aspiration to see NAqC come to life within the next two to three years is ambitious, but with his unparalleled blend of determination and vitality, it’s a vision many believe in. He’s gathered a cadre of dedicated individuals, overseeing committees, all working towards one dream: an unparalleled aquatics and other sports complex for the GOA. In Peter, many see a leader whose strengths lie in effective communication, open-mindedness, and a profound ability to inspire.

Bosko Vukojevic

Bosko’s journey into the world of water polo began serendipitously when his three daughters took a dive into the sport, sparking an immediate affection. Joining the ranks of the Ottawa Titans, he swiftly ascended the organizational ladder, securing a position on the board in 2012 and subsequently taking the helm as president by 2014. Under his visionary leadership, the Ottawa Titans underwent a transformative evolution — expanding from a modest group of around 50 members in 2012, to standing proud as Canada’s largest water polo club, boasting over 500 enthusiastic participants in both competitive and recreational brackets.

While Bosko’s athletic inclinations encompass soccer, table-tennis, and basketball, he’s occasionally spotted amidst beginner-level water polo sessions — a testament to his hands-on approach and a humble nod to the demanding nature of the sport.

Hailing from the University of Novi Sad in Serbia, Bosko clinched his BEng in Electrical Engineering and later, pursued an MSc in Computer Science from the University of Ottawa. Parallel to his passion for water sports, Bosko’s entrepreneurial spirit thrives in the high-tech sector. With a rich tapestry of over 25 years in consultancy, his expertise has been the cornerstone of projects spanning Fortune 500 companies, Canadian government departments, innovative startups, and private enterprises.

Chris Finlay

In 2001, Chris secured his American Certified Public Accountant (CPA {NH}) credential, swiftly following it up with the esteemed Chartered Accountant (CA) designation in Canada a year later. Reflecting the evolving nature of the profession, this CA designation has since metamorphosed into the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) title in recent times.

Cindi’s academic path is as impressive as her professional pursuits. She obtained her Bachelor’s in Science in Nursing from the University of British Columbia, a foundation that laid the groundwork for her medical journey. She then achieved her Doctor of Medicine from McMaster University, further solidifying her expertise in the healthcare field. Eddie Francis

At the helm of WFCU Credit Union, Eddie shines as the President and CEO. His guidance ensures the board’s support and the exceeding of institutional goals, mapping out a flourishing trajectory for the union and its stakeholders. Eddie’s vision spotlights the essence of WFCU—its brand, tech-forward offerings, unwavering service commitment, and financial robustness—all while staying true to the union’s foundational values. Eddie’s journey with WFCU Credit Union commenced in 2014, taking up the mantle of Executive Vice President, Operations and Member Experience. Pierre Lafontaine

At 48, Pierre Lafontaine embarked on his coaching journey back in 1976 with the Pointe-Claire Swim Club as an Assistant Coach. Fast forward to April 18, 2005, he dove into a pivotal role as the CEO of Swimming Canada. Spanning continents, Pierre’s illustrious coaching career has seen him shape champions and nurture talent in esteemed locations such as Montreal, Calgary, Atlanta, Phoenix, and Canberra.

Under his guidance as the Head Coach at the renowned Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), Pierre witnessed four of his proteges clinch podium finishes at the 2004 Olympics. Rewinding a bit to his tenure as the Head Coach of Phoenix Swim Club in Arizona, he steered his team to a commendable eight medal haul at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Through every role, Pierre has been synonymous with fostering excellence and propelling the sport of swimming to new heights.

Bruce Robertson

Bruce, a seasoned Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) and Certified Information Technology Professional (CITP), boasts an impressive 40-year track record in diverse spheres such as financial management, project management, process re-engineering, and risk assessments. This expansive expertise has equipped him with invaluable insights into business protocols in both the corporate and governmental arenas.

Currently steering the helm of BurntEdge Incorporated as Managing Partner, Bruce offers consultancy tailored for Canada’s federal government clientele.

Outside of his professional sphere, Bruce’s achievements take a splash into the world of competitive swimming. A decorated athlete, Bruce clinched 16 international medals for Canada, including standout performances at the 1972 Olympic Games, 1973 World Aquatic Championships, and 1974 Commonwealth Games.

His athletic prowess earned him the title of Canada’s Male Athlete of the Year in 1973. By 1974, he was graced with the Order of Canada, and three years later, he was immortalized in Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. Bruce’s dedication to the Commonwealth Sport Movement was celebrated in 2018 with the Sovereigns Medal for Volunteers, paying tribute to his significant contributions with Commonwealth Games Canada and the Commonwealth Games Federation.

In the administrative arena of sports, Bruce has been a pivotal figure in the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), having served as both Vice President and Regional Vice President for the Americas. His leadership was pivotal in overseeing multiple Games, including Gold Coast 2018, Glasgow 2014, and Melbourne 2006. He’s currently at the forefront of the Birmingham 2022 Co-ordination Commission and plays a significant role in the B2022 Games Legacy and Benefit Committee.

A champion for gender equality, Bruce pioneered the CGF’s Gender Equality Strategy. Through strategic committees, he steered initiatives like equal medal opportunities for both genders, the Women Coach Internship Programme, and ensured gender-balanced representation in various aspects of the Games, from workforce to media portrayals.

On the home front, Bruce has donned multiple hats with Commonwealth Games Canada (CGC), serving roles like Vice-President, Treasurer, and more. Additionally, his leadership has been instrumental in the Commonwealth Games Foundation of Canada, where he’s held roles ranging from President to Treasurer.

Lisa Schott

Serving as the President of Aquatics Canada Aquatiques (ACA), Lisa steers the premier conglomerate of National Sport Organizations (NSO) in Canada, encompassing Canada Artistic Swimming, Diving Canada, Swimming Canada, and Water Polo Canada. The ACA Board’s mandate revolves around augmenting the aquatic sports framework and promoting Canadian ethics, interests, and values both domestically and internationally. This pivotal role necessitates impeccable communication, unwavering confidence, and a holistic understanding of the multifaceted needs of all aquatic disciplines. As the Chair of the Technical Committee for the Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA), Lisa’s journey from grassroots club activities in Calgary, Alberta, to the global aquatic sports zenith, is a testament to her depth of experience. Her volunteer role encompasses a vast array of responsibilities – from dissecting improvement avenues for Artistic Swimming to deliberating on rule amendments and enhancements. Lisa’s expertise further extends to assessing standard equipment specifications for Olympic Games and global competitions. Moreover, she plays an instrumental role in official selection and training, overseeing conduct, and addressing potential disputes.

A key player in curating international aquatic events in Canada, Lisa’s portfolio boasts of World Series, World Cup events, and the 2011 Pan Am Games in Toronto. Add to that, her extensive attendance at various FINA World Championships, Olympic, and Pan Am Games. With an acute knowledge of world-class facilities and proficiency in orchestrating international events, Lisa’s counsel is highly coveted globally. Her unparalleled influence has not only brought major events to Canadian shores but has also seen her advising the Canadian Olympic Committee in diverse capacities.

Andrea Schwartz Smith

Position: Governor

Andrea, an astute entrepreneur and seasoned business owner, brings a unique blend of corporate acumen and athletic prowess to the fore. With an illustrious career in coaching that spans over two decades, she possesses a profound understanding of the nuances of swimming, both as a mentor and a former competitor.

Between 1995 and 2000, Andrea was a shining star in the Canadian National Swim team, distinguishing herself in various international arenas. Not only did she showcase her mettle at the 1996 Olympic Games, but Andrea also made waves at the 1995, 1997, and 1999 Pan Pacific Games. Her participation in the 1998 Commonwealth Games, as well as the 1997 and 1999 World Championships, further solidified her reputation as a formidable force in the swimming world. Besides these major events, Andrea’s expertise was on display at numerous World Cup Events, where her consistent performances drew admiration and acclaim.

Beyond her international accolades, Andrea’s dominance was evident on the home front as well. A staggering 16-time National Champion, she has etched her name into the record books with several provincial records that bear testament to her speed, skill, and dedication. Her prowess in the pool didn’t go unnoticed, as evidenced by her being crowned the Saskatchewan Female Athlete of the Year in 1995—a fitting recognition of her dedication, talent, and contribution to the sport.

Carolyn Waldo

Carolyn Waldo stands as a beacon of excellence in both the sporting and media worlds. A seasoned Media & PR consultant, inspiring motivational speaker, and engaging emcee, she is deeply entrenched in the sports realm as an Olympic Champion, Hall of Famer, and an avid enthusiast. Interestingly, her incredible journey in aquatics began with a bit of an ironic twist; she almost drowned at a tender age of three!

Though her introduction to water was traumatic, she took her first strokes in swimming only at 10. By the age of 23, Carolyn had transformed from a novice swimmer to a synchronized swimming sensation, clinching two Olympic Golds and an Olympic Silver medal. Such accolades rightfully position her among the most illustrious aquatics athletes ever produced by Canada.

Hailing from Quebec, a young Carolyn harbored ambitions of being an Olympic athlete. Overcoming her initial fear of water was no small feat, but it set her on a trajectory to dominate the world of synchronized swimming. Her list of accolades is both extensive and impressive: victories at the 1985 Rome and Spanish Opens, the 1985 FINA World Cup, the 1986 Spanish Open, the 1986 Commonwealth Games, the 1986 World Championships, the 1987 Pan Pacific Championships, and the 1987 FINA World Cup.

Following her spectacular run in the pool, Carolyn seamlessly transitioned into the world of media, carving out a successful career as a Broadcast Journalist with CTV.

Her contributions and excellence were duly recognized, leading to her being conferred with the title of Officer of the Order of Canada in 1988. Carolyn’s trophy cabinet boasts of multiple awards like the Velma Springstead Trophy (which she clinched four times between 1985-88), the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award (twice in 1987 and 1988), and the esteemed Lou Marsh Trophy in 1988. A testament to her indomitable spirit and achievements, Carolyn was inducted into various Halls of Fame: Canadian Olympic (1987), Alberta Sports (1991), Canada’s Sports (1991), and the International Swimming Hall of Fame (1994).

Jim’s aquatic journey commenced with a chance encounter at an outdoor pool in Ottawa, where, at the tender age of eight, a city lifeguard introduced him to the captivating world of water polo. This early exposure sparked a passion that followed him to Sir Wilfred Laurier High School, where he eagerly joined the water polo team. It was here, in 1977, that a teammate ushered him into the inaugural Ottawa Water Polo Sports School.

Immersed in rigorous training five days a week at the University of Ottawa, Jim’s dedication paid off when, after four years, he earned his place on the Canadian National Team, a tenure spanning from 1980 to 1989. His competitive spirit saw him diving into the heart of international contests, from the World Aquatic Championships and World Student Games to the Pan American Games and Olympic Qualifications. During these years, Jim not only honed his skills but also became a distinguished ambassador for his country, traveling the globe as a proud National Team Athlete.

Jim’s passion for water polo extended into coaching, where he led teams with zeal, including the University of Ottawa Men’s Water Polo team and the Ontario Provincial Women’s U17 Team, imparting his extensive knowledge and igniting a similar passion in others.

Parallel to his athletic pursuits, Jim devoted 33 years to the City of Ottawa as an Aquatic Supervisor. In this role, he shaped the future of aquatic services, mentoring and guiding the development of staff across various facilities.
